Melasma
Melasma is a skin condition in which light-to-dark brown patches of pigment form due to the stimulation of melanocytes. Melanocytes are the melanin (pigment) producing cells.

Melasma patches can appear almost anywhere. Most people develop them in the following places:
- cheeks
- nose
- chins
- lips
- forearms
- neck
What’s the cause of melasma?
Melasma is caused by an increase in the pigment melanin in your skin. There are certain factors which can trigger melasma such as:
- sun exposure,
- hormones,
- pregnancy,
- medications.
To help prevent melasma, you must avoid/minimise exposure to the sun’s rays, wear sunscreen and put on a wide-brimmed hat. Large sunglasses which protect the skin around the cheekbones & temples would also be preferrable.
